My grandmother was fond of pithy bromides and one of her favorites was, "when one door closes on you, another one opens with unexpected opportunity." This time Kerry Kearney walks through the opened door. O serendipity! O musical bliss! Due to an unfortunate scheduling conflict which led to the show cancellation of Rockin' the Paradise on Friday September 18th, The Kerry Kearney Band will grace the stage at Lulu's for an evening of the blues. Kerry's musical reputation precedes him and needs no introduction to any and all who relish live blues music. He is our local musical champion of the blues who, over the years, has garnered the highest accolades such as the Bluesman of the Year, Best Guitarist and, under his direction with his band, Best Blues Band to name a few. I can wax and wane poetic endlessly about the music and Kerry's creativity, but what you really need to do is come down to Lulu's Friday night and experience the blues for yourself.

This Is What It's All About

Last night Lulu's was fortunate to have NYC's Wonderlust drop by for a set of instantly likable energy-infused pop-rock. They played enjoyable originals as well as some contemporary (and not so contemporary) covers with the precision of a machine and the soul of a poet. In short, it was exactly the sort of night of live music that Lulu's has been striving to bring to her stage from the very start. (Yeah, that's right, Lulu's Pub is a female entity, like a ship.) We also had Bugsy Jones on the stage; they gratefully filled in for a dropout in the lineup. Fun rock covers were had by all (think ZZ Top, Lynryd Skynyrd, Thin Lizzy -- familiar stuff that gets you going.)

That was just Thursday. We've still got Friday and Saturday nights filled with more of the drug that is rock n roll. Look folks, get the little earbuds out of your ears and come listen to real music. Have you any idea how different live music sounds compared with compressed, digitized, homogenized, pasturized, freeze-dried MP3s? You think your zunepod gives you the music that can "still the savage breast"? Oh, no, sir.

Music can and does have an affect on your biology. Seriously. But not when you compact it down into a little postage-stamp-sized facsimile of the real thing. You want to feel the music coursing through your veins? You want the sound to wash over you and change you? Your only option is LIVE MUSIC.

Let me repeat: Listening only to MP3s is like trying to nourish your body with only Big Macs and SpaghettiOs. Sure, you can survive on that crap, but will you thrive on it? Hint: HELL NO!

So here's the challenge: Get your ass out to a live music venue. Any will do, though we're partial to you coming to Lulu's. Try it. See if you don't get all tingly and high off the live music alone. This is science. I won't say there's no place for MP3s (though I'm likely to say that place is the dumpster out back), but don't limit yourself. Live. Get out, get social and get a live music fix.

I was just updating the main website (www.luluslive.com) and I thought an upcoming night of Ska & Reggae was worth a special mention. Lulu's prides itself on original and diverse live music. We love live music -- rock, roll, metal, blues ... You name it and we love it.

This is as close as you're going to get to a live Styx show -- Rockin' The Paradise recreates an excitingly realistic Styx musical experience!

Show time is scheduled for 10 PM, with Lo-Fi 3, an original classic rock band, warming up the room at 9 PM. Doors open at 8 PM, with a cover of $6. Get there early to ensure you get a spot!

The Osprey Fishing Outing has been postponed due to reports of rogue dolphins blocking the exit to Port Jefferson harbor.

An eye witness who chose to remain anonymous stated: "They've got big teeth and a mean streak a nautical mile wide! Rip a man's head clean off, they will." Stay tuned for a new date.

Music Is Good For Your Heart

I just came across this article on the CNN website: The power of music: It's a real heart opener.

There you have it -- music is good for your heart. It may even help keep you young. What the article doesn't say is if there's a difference between live music and recorded or digital music. I think it's fair to extrapolate that going out and enjoying a live band might just edge out recorded music because it includes the added benefit of socializing and enjoying the live music experience.

Not long ago I read about a study which concluded that people who go out to concerts, plays and other live / real-time arts events live longer and are generally healthier than those who don't attend these events.

The choice is yours: stay home, get fat and old or go out and rock n roll yourself healthy. It's a no brainer, really.

What You Missed On Friday Night If You Weren't @ Lulu's

The Ronnie Penque Band was up first. Ronnie plays bass with The New Riders of the Purple Sage, but with this project he shows himself to be a talented songwriter and an engaging front man. Katie Pearlman Band followed Ronnie (Katie is also Ronnie's drummer) for more original music before rock covers band 24/7 took the stage.

It was a great night of rock n roll. Again. See what you miss if you don't show up at Lulu's? You miss new music and up-and-coming talent playing one of the best sound systems on Long Island. There're also yummy burgers and snacks to be had until late in the evening.

And there's Lulu.

The Parlotones Play Lulu’s in Port Jefferson This Saturday

The Parlotones are kind of a big deal in South Africa -- and they’re about to become a big deal all over the world. If you need proof, just check out their sound at myspace.com/theparlotones. Between their gigs at SXSW and a late-March tour of the UK, the band is making its only New York appearance at Lulu’s Village Pub in Port Jefferson this Saturday, March 14, at 9 PM. The band is sharing a stage with local classic rock band Pickled Beat. The Parlotones have steadily grown from a local indie band in Johannesburg, to South Africa’s top-selling rock act, with Fujufilm tapping their song “Beautiful” for a commercial.

The Parlotones are the top-selling rock act in South Africa and have received the South African Music Awards (SAMA) Best Rock Album in 2006 for their cd Radiocontrolledrobot, Best Band at the You Awards in 2007, FHM Readers Choice Award in 2007 and Best Music Act at the People’s Choice Awards in 2008. The band is touring in support of their latest CD A World Next Door To Yours, which is available at Amazon.com.

Music Is Dead: Thanks Apple!

One of the reasons that I'm involved passionately with the production of live musical performances is that music is such an important factor in the cultural fabric of our humanity. At the expense of sounding like a Luddite, I have lamented often the fact that most people these days get their music fix in the form of overly processed and compressed digital formats. Never mind that most do not flock to live performance venues for their musical experiences, but choose, almost exclusively to have their music delivered through their iPods, streaming audio, or any other of the mp3 ilk, with sound quality that is often degraded almost to the point of distortion. I came across this information published on the site Gizmodo and would like to share it with you:

"Each year, Stanford Professor of Music Jonathan Berger does an informal test of his students by playing a bunch of different music in a bunch of different formats. Over email, here's how he told me performs the informal study:

Students were asked to judge the quality of a variety of compression methods randomly mixed with uncompressed 44.1 KHz audio. The music examples included both orchestral, jazz and rock music. When I first did this I was expecting to hear preferences for uncompressed audio and expecting to see MP3 (at 128, 160 and 192 bit rates) well below other methods (including a proprietary wavelet-based approach and AAC). To my surprise, in the rock examples the MP3 at 128 was preferred. I repeated the experiment over 6 years and found the preference for MP3 - particularly in music with high energy (cymbal crashes, brass hits, etc) rising over time.

In other words, younger people haven't just grown more tolerant of thin, soulless MP3 renditions of their favorite music, they actually like them. Shitty MP3s, even. Professor Berger as saying that it's the "sizzle sounds" that people are loving because it's what they're comfortable with. So, yes Virginia, iPods really have killed music. People aren't just ignorant of high quality audio, they actually hate it. Gee, thanks for contributing to the downfall of civilization, Apple. Music is dead, everyone, carry on."

Well, it's official. Last night kicked off the addition of another karaoke night at Lulu's. Yes, you now can get your K on either on Wednesday night hosted by the dynamic (and often comic) DJ Chris or Sunday nights shepherded by the velvet throated lounge lizard DJ Ron. Twice in one week, you say? I say, why not! I for one do not actively participate, as I cannot carry a tune on pitch if my life depended on it, however, it does have voyeuristic appeal from my perspective as a non participant observer. What could be better than watching patrons becoming increasing uninhibited encouraged by higher levels of inebriation? They all have a blast and its great fun to share vicariously in their weekly "15 minutes" of rock n' roll fame. The club's robust sound system, concert lighting and grand stage rounds out the experience by providing the optimal venue for expressing oneself in song. So no excuses, you now have two opportunities to get you K on weekly at Lulu's Village Pub. See you there.
